Sex lubricant could stop HIV and herpes

Tuesday, July 24th, 2007
AN experimental sex lubricant designed by Australian researchers could help block both HIV and genital herpes, a study suggests.

Tests on lab animals have shown that the microbicide gel, called Viva Gel, inactivates the HIV virus and another responsible for genital herpes.

Lead researcher Dr Jeremy Paull from Melbourne-based pharmaceutical company Starpharma told the International AIDS Society conference in Sydney the gel would be used by heterosexual men who apply it directly to themselves before sex.

Is chaste the new sexy?..
2006 was the year of the raunch, when pole dancing went feminist and “empowerment” became synonymous with a baker’s dozen Jell-O shooters and a topless spot in Girl’s Gone Wild.

But if this year’s crop of “sexy” books is any guide, the backlash is now in full effect. Sure, Porn 2.0 is grabbing more viewers than ever. But with sex so commonplace, people, or at least publishers, are looking for what’s next.

This year’s sex-culture books feature virgins, men vacuuming and crafty sex toys. And, really, what’s less sexy than those?

The Bunny Book: How to Walk, Talk, Tease and Please Like a Playboy Bunny (Chronicle Books)

Sort of like a sexed-up version of The Rules, mixed with a little Swell, The Bunny Book eases you into Heffner-honed advice with sections on grooming, how to dress, and how to hold a drink before delving into the nitty-gritty sex stuff (anal and all). Though you might not want to take the tome out in public (considering the hot pink cover and candy-coloured pages), with illustrations by Annabelle Jasmin Verhoye, it’s fine for home-based consumption. The verbiage leaves something to be desired and features an overabundance of words like coochie, tushy and titties, but the advice itself is fairly realistic and not unlike anything you might find in a popular women’s mag. Think Cosmo. Believe it or not, Bunnies don’t like to weigh themselves, they’re big on safety, and they’re “hopeful about monogamy” even though they “don’t think people are naturally monogamous.” Most importantly, they’re down with personal choice.

A vibrating condom: a legal contraceptive or illegal sex toy?

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

In India, the land of the Kama Sutra — the timeless treatise on love — a ruckus has broken out over the marketing of a vibrating condom. Some politicians have declared it a sex toy, which should be banned as it goes against the country’s culture, while health officials are classifying it as a birth control device. The controversy was recently sparked when Kailash Vijayavargiya, minister in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, wrote to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh accusing his coalition government of promoting sex toys and sex for pleasure.

The world famous erotic temples of Khajuraho, a big draw among tourists — both Indian and foreign — is located in Madhya Pradesh.

Vijayavargiya’s ire was raised against the sale of ribbed condoms that are fitted with a vibrating ring. He posited that condoms as a birth control method are fine, but objected to the noted ‘add-on.’

The sale of sex toys and pornography is banned in India.

When sex toys turn green — for health, that is

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

It is, perhaps, a measure of just how mainstream sex toys have become that there are now budding consumer and environmental awareness campaigns being waged over them.

The biggest controversy is about the materials from which many toys are made.

Forget dogging – the new sex craze is ‘furring’.

Participants – sometimes called ‘furverts’ – also dress as rabbits, squirrels or cartoon characters.

One furry – known as ‘Paddington’ – regularly takes part in the activity in woods at St Austell, Cornwall.

He said: ‘St Austell is fast becoming a hotbed for furries since a new group started up.

Murder case teacher ’spoke of sex games to colleague’

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

SPECIAL needs teacher Jane Longhurst confessed to colleagues she let her boyfriend suffocate her during sex, years before she was killed by bondage-obsessed Graham Coutts, it is alleged.

Guitarist Coutts, 39, admits throttling the Reading-born teacher in 2003 but denies murder, claiming the death was an accident after a sex game went too far.

Former colleague Ruth Sinclair, who taught with Jane at Netherhall School in Cambridge, told an Old Bailey jury of hearing revelations about her friend’s sex life.

Miss Sinclair alleged Jane made a giggling confession about her boyfriend, a man called Lincoln, during a staff room chat in 1996.

Condoms promote sex facts

Monday, June 25th, 2007
Did you know: A pig’s orgasm lasts 30 minutes, a lion can mate 50 times a day, a whale has the largest sex organ in the animal kingdom, and a female rabbit has two “reproductive channels”? These are just some of the remarkable but true findings compiled by LifeStyles(R) brand condoms on the “mating dance” in the animal kingdom while researching human sexuality to help promote the use of condoms for sexual health and pleasure. “Call it what you want — animal attraction, human nature, basic instinct — it’s a jungle out there, and humans perform a mating dance just the same as their animal counterparts,” said Carol Carrozza, VP, Consumer Marketing, Ansell Healthcare Products LLC, maker of LifeStyles(R) brand condoms. “LifeStyles products make that dance a sensual and sexually exciting experience. And, unforgettable, just like some of the facts below.”

Brought to you by LifeStyles(R) condoms, here are the “Top 10 Facts You Probably Did Not Know about Animals - and May be Surprised to Learn!”
