WATCH OUT! ICE CREAM: Convicted sex offender arrested while driving ice cream truck
A convicted sex offender barred from having any contact with young children was arrested after police found him driving an ice cream truck, DuPage County authorities said Monday.Raymond Mitchell, 58, was charged Saturday after DuPage County sheriff’s detectives allegedly saw him talking to children while selling ice cream from a truck parked near Glen Ellyn, police said.
It’s the second suburban arrest in a week in which an ice cream truck driver is accused of having illegal contact with children.
Last week, ice cream truck driver Douglas Jones of Aurora was arrested in Kane County for allegedly exposing himself to a 3-year-old boy. Jones, 46, is a substitute teacher, a member of the Kane County Regional Board of Education and an ordained minister, according to authorities.
Mitchell was placed on probation last year in Cook County for possessing child pornography. As a registered sex offender, he is barred from knowingly having contact with children younger than 18, authorities said.
Mitchell was first questioned by police because he witnessed an accident while driving the ice cream truck. A background check indicated he was a registered sex offender, prompting sheriff’s detectives to put him under surveillance.
“Mr. Mitchell was seen by detectives, on more than one occasion, speaking with several children who were gathered around his ice cream truck,'’ DuPage County Sheriff John Zaruba said.
He remains jailed on a single felony count of communicating with a child — an offense that carries a maximum three-year prison term.
