GPS System Could Track Sex Offenders

story by: Courtney Gousman

VANDERBURGH CO. - Vanderburgh County could soon be using bracelets armed with GPS tracking systems to keep up with sex offenders. Vanderburgh County was selected as one of four Indiana counties to participate in a pilot program that would allow sex offenders to be tracked everywhere they go.

Law enforcement leaders are excited about the program, but NEWS 25 talked to one sex offender who says it’s an invasion of privacy.

His first name is Brandon. He’s a convicted sex offender. He served five years for sodomizing a young child.

He did not want us to show his face on camera or use his last name because he says he’s trying to start over. Brandon agreed to meet with NEWS 25 after he found out about the county possibly using tracking bracelets that would make sex offender’s every move known by the law.

“You got a face on the computer. You got a name, you got an address. That’s all you need. I mean you put a tracking device, now you can find us everywhere you go. We don’t have any privacy,” says Brandon.

Vanderburgh County Sheriff, Eric Williams, feels the program would be an asset to the county.

“Sex offenders are an issue everywhere. All the time, about closely monitoring these people. Making sure always know where they’re at and what they’re doing,” says Williams.

Williams explained, the devices would be tracked by satellite.

“It’s still kind of rough but part of the computer screen will have a map of the county. It will have areas that are within the thousand-foot range of schools, licensed day cares and places they’re not permitted to be. So you’ll be able to tell instantly if there’s a violation,” says Williams.

Williams tells us 25 of the county’s most serious sex offenders would be fitted for the bracelets. These offenders would be on parole.

“The fact that the offender knows we’re watching them all the time, anyway may help be a significant deterrent for re offending,” says Williams.

Before this program takes off here, Vanderburgh County Commissioners must approve the idea. So far, there is no target date as to when this one-year project will be up and running.

Williams tells NEWS 25 the state’s Department of Corrections would pick up the tab for the program.

sex offenders often act the same way they did before. I think i prefer protect their future victims than their intimacy.
